When we speak about diversity, even the meanings and perceptions might be diverse. Generation X and Boomers see diversity as ensuring equal chances for everybody, regardless the demographics (age, gender, culture, ethnicity, LGBT), while Millennials understand diversity as accommodating various backgrounds, experiences, values and needs. Presently, as diversity is this mixture of both tangible and subtle aspects, the challenge is to find ways for making the most of these differences -Valentin Păuna, HR Director METRO Cash & Carry Romania.
Why and since when does your company believe and invest in diversity management?
Diversity is a key part of our corporate culture at the REWE Group and it was extended to Penny Market in Romania from the very beginning. We believe that promoting diversity is particularly important for ensuring company success at a time of constant demographic change in society.

Why and since when has your company believed in and invested in diversity management?
We believe that diversity is a key element for evolution and innovation and we take great pride in our policy and programs. Diversity management is an important part of our organizational culture both globally and locally. I’ll even go as far as to say that it is embedded in our company’s DNA.
I really hope that the number of the companies who don’t prioritize diversity and inclusion will decrease in the near future. It is not my business to give advice, but here it is my belief: even outside the company’s culture, nowadays, we should take one minute of reflection. A minute to stop from the daily rush and think honestly about our role and impact on the society we live in, because everything we do, we think, we speak or share, as individuals or business entities, has an impact on the big picture. Our behaviour has the power to be a model for the others and to influence forward, so we must take care what kind of example we choose to be.

According to Carmen Avramescu, HR Regional Director at Tenaris, everything starts with the commitment and support received from top management in the creation and implementation of actions plans designed to build a more diverse organizational culture. Then, efforts should be put into reducing and preventing unconscious biases such as fighting preconceived ideas that some working places are only suitable to men. Last, but not least, a considerate attention should be given to “walking the talk” by transforming words into real actions.

For several years now our voluntary policy in this field has had a more ambitious objective: make diversity a performance driver. Even if it is very hard to make a correlation between performance and diversity, it has been proven that this alchemy is a success, employees are more motivated, they feel a stronger sense of belonging and demonstrate greater professional commitment. So, in the end there is a competitive advantage: greater appeal as an employer, better knowledge of our markets, quality of the atmosphere at work, increased innovation capacity etc.

Respect for diversity is one of the most important values at KRUK. We treat diversity as a source of innovation and effectiveness. KRUK Romania joining the European platform Diversity Charter is the expression of our determination to promote diversity and equality of chances. We are implementing these human resources management principles for some time now, following the model of our mother-company in Poland, that signed the Diversity Charter since 2013.
The case for embracing diversity in the workforce is stronger than ever. Diverse companies now outperform non-diverse companies! Why? Well, when people from all different backgrounds come together, they bring different perspectives, information, and world views. This mix creates more innovation, a more productive team, and ultimately a more profitable business. According to Alexandru Aldoescu, Head of HR, General Affairs & Procurement Manager (Romania and Bulgaria), Samsung Electronics Romania, diversity is something every company should strive for.
You may have noticed an increase in posts about diversity and inclusion on the Romanian Diversity Charter’s webpage recently.
